The lake averages only about 9 to 10 feet deep across roughly 148 square miles, and wind blowing over 24 miles of open water stirs the whole water column, resuspending fine bottom sediment. That suspended silt and clay, not sewage, is the main reason the water looks brown; the lake was naturally turbid long before anyone settled here.

Carp, introduced in the late 1870s to early 1880s, came to make up roughly 91 percent of the lake's fish biomass, uprooting plants, stirring up sediment, and fertilizing algae. Large-scale commercial netting began in 2010, and as of mid-2025 more than 32 million pounds had been removed. The program reports reaching its 75 percent biomass reduction target, though the lake is still turbid and surviving carp keep reproducing.
It depends on conditions. The lake is warm, shallow, and nutrient-rich, so cyanobacteria blooms happen, and you cannot tell whether a bloom is toxic by looking at it. In 2024 the Legislature repealed the underlying law.
Better than its reputation suggests. Utah Lake State Park in Provo is the main gateway, with four boat ramps, a campground, and a swimming beach, and four other public marinas ring the lake. Anglers target channel catfish, walleye, white bass, black bass, and panfish; white bass make big spring runs and catfish regularly top 20 pounds. Plan around wind, since afternoons turn choppy fast on this shallow lake.
